Process plants (refineries and petrochemical plants) are very complex facilities consisting of static and rotating equipment, piping systems, instruments, electrical cable systems, electronics, control systems, and computer consoles. The (EPC) engineering design, procurement and construction of process plants involves a multi and interdisciplinary team effort. In the design and engineering effort, layout  and design of plant piping systems  forms a major part. The primary goal is to provide safe, dependable and economically viable design for processing facilities.


There are very few formal training programs that provide design and engineering of process plants and piping systems at tertiary level education. Acquiring skills  on the job, reduces productivity and efficiency, hence not encouraged by the employer.
